Editor's Note: The photo gallery contains images of dead deer that may be disturbing to some viewers.SANPETE COUNTY — Division of Wildlife Resources officials are asking for the public’s help in locating those responsible for illegally killing two buck mule deer.
The first poaching incident occurred near the Axhandle Canyon area of the South Nebo Mountains in Sanpete County, according to a DWR news release. A man was in the area hunting for Christmas trees with his family when he located the carcass of the 2x3 buck.
The poaching was reported Nov. 28 and an investigation showed the deer had been illegally shot and left to waste during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the news release said.
The second poaching incident occurred in the Tidwell Slopes area of Sevier County. A group of cow elk hunters located the 4x3 buck on Nov. 28 and reported it to DWR officials. The investigation showed the buck had also been illegally shot and left to waste Thanksgiving night or the next morning, the news release said.
DWR officials said the time frame that the two bucks were poached was during the peak of their breeding season when bucks are the most vulnerable.
Anyone with information regarding the illegal killing of these deer can contact the UTIP hotline at 1-800-662-3337. Rewards are available for information leading to the arrests of the poachers, and tipsters can remain anonymous.
