MAGNA — A wanted federal fugitive led police on a high-speed chase early Friday.

The chase ended when the man tried to flee from a Unified police officer's patrol vehicle that was coming directly at him, and backed up at a high rate of speed into a parked pickup truck, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

The incident began about 1 a.m. when officers ran a license plate check on a vehicle that came back as belonging to Anthony Haas, 36, who had a federal warrant out for his arrest, Hoyal said.

When the officer tried to pull the vehicle over near 3100 South and 9000 West, Haas fled, according to Hoyal. The chase went to 8000 West before Haas went into a residential area and police lost him.

Officers spotted him again near 5600 West and 3900 South and resumed the pursuit until he again went into a neighborhood. The chase ended with the crash when officers found him near 4650 South and 3550 West.

The chase lasted about 15 minutes with speeds on the main roads reaching 90 to 100 mph, Hoyal said. In addition to the warrants, Haas was also arrested for investigation of fleeing, and investigation of having methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia inside his vehicle.

A federal grand jury indicted Haas in September on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, drug distribution, possession of a firearm used for drug trafficking and drug possession, according to court documents.
