MIDVALE — A 14-year-old boy driving a stolen vehicle was thwarted in his escape attempt early Wednesday when he turned onto a dead-end street, police say.
A Sandy police officer discovered someone driving a stolen car shortly after midnight near the border of Midvale and Sandy, according to Sandy Police Sgt. Dean Carriger. The officer requested backup and followed the vehicle from a distance.
The teen apparently noticed a police car following him and "went to flee, but ran into (a) dead-end street," Carriger said. The driver got out of the car and ran, but the officer caught him at 266 W. Olympus St.
"Once in custody, they found the driver was a 14-year-old male juvenile. He was the only occupant in the vehicle," Carriger said.
Police learned the car had been missing from West Jordan since Thanksgiving. They were unsure if the young man stole the car or got it from somewhere else.
Police booked the teen into the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center for investigation of possession of a stolen vehicle and operating a vehicle without a license.
