SALT LAKE CITY — A 12-year-old is in serious condition after he was hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle Monday evening.
The accident occurred at 1900 E. 2100 South around 4:45 p.m., according to Salt Lake City police detective Greg Wilking. Wilking said it was unclear if the boy was crossing 2100 South or turning onto the street, but he entered the crosswalk when the road wasn’t clear and was hit by a vehicle.
The 12-year-old wasn’t wearing reflective clothing and didn’t have a light on his bicycle at the time of the accident, Wilking said. He was transported to an area hospital in serious condition, and his condition was unknown Tuesday morning.
Several lanes of 2100 South were closed during the cleanup of the accident, Wilking said.
Wilking also cautioned pedestrians and cyclists to use caution when crossing busy streets during dusk.
“If you are riding at that time of night on a bike, you need to be very aware of your surroundings and make sure you are lit up,” Wilking said. “Even if it’s not completely dark out, dusk is a dangerous time. People have a hard time seeing. And you are talking about right in the hours of rush hour too, when there is a lot of traffic. You need to be very aware.”
The driver of the vehicle was not cited.
