SALT LAKE CITY — Make no mistake, Black Friday might be full of killer deals, but there are some items that you should avoid altogether.
Becky Vilos is a popular Utah blogger who runs utahsweetsavings.com. It's her job to track the best deals for her thousands of readers. Here is a list of the five things she said you should not buy on Black Friday.
Toys
This one might surprise you, but Vilos said historically, prices on toys actually drop about two weeks before Christmas. If there's a toy you've been researching and you find a great deal on Black Friday, grab it up. Otherwise, it's best to wait.
Tools
The same advice goes for tools. Vilos found a tool set online that was $90 in October, but on Thursday, it cost $110 on sale. Vilos said the price will likely drop again before Christmas so it is better to wait to buy.
Exercise equipment
Vilos said the best time to buy exercise equipment is in January. When everyone is looking to get in shape after the holidays, exercise equipment goes on sale. But even in December, she said, the prices will definitely drop lower than on Black Friday.
Cheap TVs
TVs are often one of the most sought-after Black Friday items, but Vilos recommends holding off on making that purchase on Friday. Those big TVs that often feed the Black Friday frenzy are not always what they seem to be.
"They're special just-Black Friday TVs," Vilos said. "They're the dumbed down version of the smart TV. They have less bells and whistles, they have less things, which makes the prices lower. But they're not the best deal."
Violos said shoppers should keep an eye on prices before and after Black Friday to get the TV they really want.
Impulse buys
You might be tempted to buy more things that seem like a bargain when you're shopping on Black Friday. However, Vilos recommends not giving in to those impulses. Only buy what you've researched and what is on your list. Nine times out of 10, those other items are going to drop even more.
