GREEN RIVER, Wyoming — A 4-year-old girl drowned in Flaming Gorge Reservoir Saturday after the vehicle she was in rolled into the water.

Four people, including the young girl, were fishing about 4 p.m. along the west bank of the reservoir, about 14 miles south of Green River, according to a statement by the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office.

A Jeep Wrangler parked an undisclosed distance from the shoreline rolled into the water and submerged completely. Sweetwater County Sheriff's detective Dick Blust, Jr. declined to answer questions Sunday about what may have caused the vehicle to roll.

One of the other members of the fishing party "attempted to stop the vehicle and was injured in the process," according to the statement. The extent of that person's injuries were not revealed.

The group hiked to an area where they could get cell phone coverage and called for help.

The Green River Fire Department, the U.S. Forest Service, a helicopter from the University of Utah Medical Center, and the Sweetwater Dive Team assisted in the recovery. The Jeep was located on its top under about 15 feet of water, according to the sheriff's office.

The name of the girl was not released pending notification of family members.
