WEST JORDAN — A Walgreens clerk was assaulted by two men after telling them he couldn’t legally sell alcohol due to the time they entered the store early Saturday morning, police say.

Around 1:30 a.m., the men told the clerk they were going to take the beer despite the state law that prohibits commercial sale of alcohol after 1 a.m., West Jordan police officer Randy Anglesey said. When the clerk tried to stop them, he was punched in the face, and as he fell to the ground the men hit him several more times.

Another Walgreens employee called police as the men ran out of the store located at 7794 Redwood Rd. with the beer, Anglesey said.

The clerk was transported to a nearby hospital for an evaluation, but did not suffer any major injuries, according to Anglesey.

The men are described as Polynesian young adults, Anglesey said. Police were in the process of reviewing surveillance video of the alleged assault and robbery Saturday afternoon.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
