SALT LAKE CITY — Three people were arrested after attempting to flee from police Saturday, police said.

Melissa Nichole Mendez, 26, was driving a white Mercedes at high speed in the area of 200 S. and 1000 West when an officer attempted to stop her for speeding at about 1:49 a.m., according to Salt Lake police Sgt. Robin Heiden.

She said the officer was unable to catch up with the vehicle, but found it abandoned behind a Mexican restaurant located at 150 S. 900 W. a few minutes later.

“They quickly located and detained the three occupants as they tried to escape into Art’s Place Bar,” a statement from police reads.

Mendez was arrested on suspicion of attempted fleeing, a felony, in addition to possession of heroin, marijuana and paraphernalia, according to a probable cause statement. Two men, who were occupants in the car, were arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor public intoxication.
