SALT LAKE CITY — A man was stabbed in the back after a right-of-way argument with a bicyclist, police say.

At about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, an approximately 60-year-old man was walking southbound on the sidewalk on 900 East near 500 South when a man on a bike approached him from behind, according to Lt. Carl Merino from the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The bicyclist passed the pedestrian and yelled at him to get off the sidewalk, Merino said.

"The bicyclist turned around, rode his bike back to the pedestrian and demanded that the pedestrian yield to the bicyclist," Merino said.

The argument escalated, and the bicyclist allegedly stabbed the pedestrian in the back "near the kidneys." The weapon is believed to be a knife, Merino said.

The man was taken to a local hospital and was in surgery as of 7:30 p.m. but was reportedly in stable condition, Merino said.

Police are asking for help in identifying and locating the man on the bike. He is described as a white male between the ages of 50 and 60 years old. At the time of the incident he was wearing black clothing, an orange bicycle jacket and a red helmet. He also has a salt-and-pepper moustache.

Anyone with information is asked to call Salt Lake police at 801-799-3000.
