SALT LAKE CITY — A convenience store clerk was shot to death early Sunday after a gunman entered the store on California Avenue and an argument broke out.

A Salt Lake Police Department statement identified the victim as Jamie Blalack, 29, and by Sunday afternoon detectives had arrested Anthony William Cline, 30.

Salt Lake police detective Richard Chipping said the gunman entered the 7-Eleven at 1157 W. California Ave. at 1:20 a.m., got into an argument with the cashier and then shot and killed him. Police said the shooting happened after an argument broke out over cigarettes and the gunman was asked to leave the store.

"It is an unfortunate situation. Our condolences go out to the family," he said.

Cline was taken into custody without incident.
