HURRICANE — It appeared the Hurricane Tigers were out to upset the defending 3AA state champions Friday.
After all, the Tigers were hosting region rival Desert Hills, and held a 3-0 lead at halftime on the back of a strong defense.
However, the Thunder took control in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points as they prevailed 21-3 in a 3AA South game.
Desert Hills scored all of its points in the second half.
Neither team could move the ball effectively early on, but the Tigers finally got on the board in the second quarter. Kicker JD Stansworth connected on a 35-yard field goal, giving Hurricane a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The Thunder returned the favor in the third quarter though, scoring 14 points. The first score came on a 61-yard punt return by Nephi Sewell, while Bridger Cowdin scored the second touchdown on a 2-yard run.
Cowdin also scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter on an 8-yard run.
