LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — A hiker at Lisa Falls in Little Cottonwood Canyon fell to his death Thursday, according to police.

The victim, Joshua Linares, 19, of West Jordan went hiking alone in the Lisa Falls area Thursday afternoon, said Lt. Justin Hoyal with the Unified Police Department. When he didn't get home at 4:30, his family went to search for him. They found his car in the parking area and called police at about 8:30 p.m., Hoyal said.

Crews and a medical helicopter searched the area Thursday evening but had to call the search off around 11:30 p.m. because it was too dark, he said. Rescue teams resumed their search around 7:30 a.m. Friday. Linares' body was found around 9:15 a.m. and was pronounced dead on the scene.

"He'd taken a very lengthy fall, probably in excess of 100 feet," Hoyal said.

Crews went in on foot to recover the body and Linares was flown out by helicopter.

Linares was an "avid hiker" and had extra gear including a sleeping bag, Hoyal said, but did not have correct gear needed for the steep area.

"It is a very steep area, very steep cliffs," he said. "(The man) didn't have technical climbing gear, and this is an area that would require that."

Earlier this week, police rescued two hikers stranded overnight on a cliff at Lisa Falls.
