SALT LAKE CITY — Police are asking for the public's help to find a man who robbed a Zions Bank branch on Monday.

At about 5 p.m., a man walked into the Zions Bank, 701 E. 400 South, and demanded money from a teller, said Lt. Carl Merino of the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The man became upset when a woman who was already in the bank being helped by another teller told someone on the phone that the bank was being robbed.

“I was at the bank, on the phone at the time the robber came in, and I just said on the phone with my mortgage broker, ‘Call the police now,’ " said the woman, who did not wish to be identified. "He thought it was just a joke, and I said ‘No, I am at the Zions Bank on 4th South, call the police now.’”

The robber pointed a gun at the witness and her dog after he heard her call for help.

“The guy saw me and that I was on the phone, and then he came over to me and said, 'Put the phone down now.' And so I put the phone down, but left it turned on so that my mortgage broker could hear everything that was going on,” the witness said.

Soon after, the man left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money and headed north, according to eyewitnesses.

The man is described as a male in his late 20s to early 30s, between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-9 with a "darker complexion," police said. He was wearing a black hoodie at the time of the robbery.

No one in the bank suffered any injuries, but the victims are still rattled after the incident, police said.

“Everybody is OK, just very frightened," Merino said. "He was fairly aggressive during the robbery and put forth a lot of fear into people that were inside the bank.”

Investigators are still in the process of acquiring video from the security cameras at the bank.

If you have any information about the robbery or the whereabouts of the man you can call Salt Lake police at 801-799-3000.
