PROVO — Provo-based band, Neon Trees, was given keys to the city by the Provo mayor during a free concert Friday night.

The Blue Aces, Fictionist and Neon Trees performed during the fifth anniversary of the Rooftop Concert Series. Google Fiber sponsored the event and teamed with the Rooftop Concert Series to make a surprise announcement on Wednesday that Neon Trees was joining the lineup.

The free concert was held in front of the Nu Skin building on Center Street in Provo and thousands filled the street. Provo City Deputy Mayor, Corey Norman, estimated over 7,000 people attended the concert and said it was double the normal attendance for the rooftop concerts.

Neon Trees lead singer, Tyler Glenn, talked about the band’s love of Provo and their beginning performances in local venues, Velour and Muse Music. During the concert, Provo Mayor John Curtis went on stage and presented all four members of the band with keys to the city.

“Provo loves Neon Trees,” Curtis said during his presentation. “Today is officially Oct. 3 — Neon Trees Day.”

Norman said the award is not given often and that Curtis has only awarded someone the key to the city twice since 2009.

“There has been such amazing stuff that’s happened in our downtown and a lot of it has to do with our music scene and our art scene and getting people to our downtown area,” Norman said. “It’s becoming a destination and again, a lot of it has to do with groups like Neon Trees that are coming and performing and breathing life into an area of our town that needed it. We welcome it. We embrace it. We love it.”

Neon Trees’ next performance will be Oct. 16 at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
