MAGNA — A 57-year-old Stansbury man died Saturday when his motorcycle rear-ended a car on SR 201, throwing him from the vehicle. The man was not wearing a helmet, a Utah Highway Patrol trooper said.

The accident happened at around 6:30 p.m. on westbound SR 201 near 9180 West, UHP Sgt. Chamberlin Neff said. Investigators believe the setting sun prevented the man from seeing the car in front of him.

"We have quite a few crashes out here because of the sun," Neff said.

Construction has narrowed the freeway to one lane in the area where the crash occurred, but Neff did not know whether the car slowed down or the motorcyclist sped up before the collision.

The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike, landing roughly 50 feet away, Neff said. He suffered severe head trauma and died at the scene.

Neither the driver nor passenger in the car were injured, the sergeant said.

"The overall lesson learned that we want to pass on to you is when you're traveling on a motorcycle make sure that you're wearing the proper protective gear," Neff said. "We would not be in this situation tonight if the gentleman that's deceased now was wearing a helmet."

The man's name was withheld, pending notification of family.
