WEST HAVEN — A woman was arrested Thursday after stabbing her 12-year-old stepson during a confrontation, police said.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. near 2265 S. 1100 West, according to Weber County Sheriff’s Sgt. Lane Findlay. A woman had recently moved out of an apartment in the area, but returned to retrieve some of her belongings, Findlay said. The woman had a confrontation with a 12-year-old in the apartment who accused her of taking items that weren’t hers.

An argument ensued and the boy called his father who instructed him to call 911. While the boy was on the phone with dispatch, a fight broke out and the woman stabbed him with a kitchen knife, Findlay said.

Detectives were dispatched to the residence and discovered the boy had a superficial cut on his left arm and a stab wound to his abdomen. The 12-year-old was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Shelly McGill, 53, was taken into custody and interviewed by police. After further investigation, she was booked into the Weber County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault, child abuse and interruption of a communication device.

“Even though we had conflicting stories and there were no witnesses, I don’t know how an adult could ever justify stabbing a child,” Findlay said. “Even if her claim is that he had hit her, to take it to that level is completely unacceptable.”

Findlay said the boy was reported to be in good condition at the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
