SALT LAKE CITY — A driver who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs ran a stop sign early Friday morning and hit a food truck, police say.

Around 12:30 a.m., the driver of an SUV ran a stop sign at 900 W. 600 South in Salt Lake City. The SUV crashed into a food truck that was stopped at the stop sign and the food cart detached from the truck and slammed back into the SUV, Salt Lake police Sgt. Aaron Leavitt said.

Police found meth inside the SUV, and firefighters on the scene reported smelling alcohol on the driver, Leavitt added.

The driver of the SUV was thrown from the vehicle and suffered some injuries but is in “good” condition, Leavitt said. The driver and passenger in the food truck suffered minor injuries. All three were taken to the hospital.

Authorities had a lot to clean up on the road, he said.

“Grease and oil from cooking was spilled out onto the roadway," Leavitt said. "We put an absorbent on the roadway to keep that from getting into the gutters or the rain system."

After the SUV driver is released from the hospital, officers will take him to the police station where he will be facing driving under the influence and drug possession charges

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
