WEST JORDAN — A hay barn in West Jordan caught fire early Friday morning and is completely engulfed in flames, fire officials say.

Around 4:30 a.m., homeowners near 1100 W. 8400 South in West Jordan awoke to a noise and went outside to find the hay barn in their backyard was on fire, said West Jordan battalion Chief Steve Holmes. As firefighters rushed to the scene, they could see the fire “from a pretty big distance away,” Holmes said, and additional crews were called in to help.

Fire crews had difficulty getting engines close to the fire because there is a single lane road to the house for at least a quarter mile, Holmes said.

The homeowners did not sustain any injuries. A cow by the fire was safely rescued, Holmes said. Damage is estimated to be out $23,000 and the loss of hay will impact cattle feed for two farms.

Holmes expects crews to spend most of the day trying to put out the fire.

“We're knocking it down best we can,” Holmes added.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
