VERNAL — A teenage driver fell asleep at the wheel early Saturday morning and crashed into four vehicles on a new car lot after taking out a light pole and several concrete flower planters, according to Vernal police.
The teen was driving west on U.S. 40 in a 2010 Ford Expedition about 6:40 a.m. when she dozed off, Vernal Assistant Police Chief Keith Campbell said. The sport-utility vehicle crossed both of the highway's eastbound lanes before hitting a light pole, Campbell said.
From there, the SUV went through several concrete flower planters before crashing into four new vehicles on the lot at Showalter Ford, 333 W. Main, police said.
The crash totaled a 2014 Ford Expedition and a 2014 Ford F-150, according to the dealership. Two other F-150s were damaged. A damage estimate was still being calculated Tuesday, Campbell said.
The teen driver was not injured, the assistant police chief said. She was cited for failure to operate a vehicle in a single lane.
