LOGAN — Chihuahuas recently rescued from a hoarding situation in Logan are waiting for a loving new home.
A total of 14 Chihuahuas were turned in after a landlord discovered the large number and told his tenant the dogs couldn’t stay, according to Cache Humane Society executive director Roland Bringhurst. He said family members brought the dogs to the shelter in July and eight have since been adopted.
“They were all very scared and un-socialized (when they were brought in),” he said. “Some were quite sick and some, due to the inbreeding, had other problems too.”
The owner didn’t spay or neuter any of the dogs and allowed them to breed unrestricted, according to Bringhurst. Two of the dogs are still unavailable for adoption; one is not used to humans so it is difficult to interact with, and another is sick and being treated.
Four other dogs are still waiting for a family to take them home. Bringhurst said they are still a little skittish, but friendly and enjoy being petted.
The dogs came to the shelter without names, so the staff decided to name all of them after donuts, like Apple Fritter, Chocolate Iced and Cinnamon Twist.
“Maybe my staff was hinting that they wanted donuts that day,” Bringhurst joked.
He encouraged those who are looking for a pet to adopt from a shelter instead of buying from a breeder.
