NORTH SALT LAKE — Four people suffered minor injuries when a tanker truck and FrontRunner train collided Friday, officials said.
The accident occurred at the tracks located near 125 W. Center Street in North Salt Lake at about 1 p.m. Officials said commuters should avoid the area. The northbound off-ramp from I-15 for Center Street is closed.
People traveling on FrontRunner should expect significant delays, according to UTA. Officials said the track in North Salt Lake will be out of service until 8 p.m.; commuters should expect 60 minute delays for the northbound service and 30 minute delays for southbound service.
There will be buses at the North Temple station starting at 3:30 p.m. to take customers to all Ogden stations, according to UTA. The buses will leave approximately every 39 minutes.
The tanker truck struck by the train was hired by Union Pacific, according to the North Salt Lake Police Department. It had tank full of chemicals and was on the tracks to spray for weeds.
The truck was turning to exit off Center Street when the arms came down for the train and the truck couldn't get out in time, investigators said.
Daniel Kotter was riding in the FrontRunner car that collided with the truck. He said the conductor told riders he slowed the train to 60 mph at the time of the collision.
"Rocks came flying inside at people in (the) car," he wrote in an email. "The people upstairs in this car seemed to have been thrown around more than ground level riders."
The passengers on the train involved with the accident were transported to the Woods Cross Station by bus.
A small grass fire was also started in the area as a result of the crash, but was quickly extinguished, according to the South Davis Metro Fire Agency.
