SALT LAKE CITY — A man who stole a motor home from a Davis County dealership was arrested Saturday morning following a chase and standoff on I-15, according to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Jeff Nigbur.

Around 5 a.m., Sunset police spotted a large, bus-like RV, valued at about $200,000, leaving a dealership, Nigbur said. Officers pursued the man in the motor home onto the freeway heading southbound where deputies from the Davis County Sheriff’s Office chased the vehicle and tried to stop it.

UHP got involved in the pursuit once the man entered Salt Lake County, and troopers set up two sets of spikes near 400 North, Nigbur said. The man was able to avoid the attempts, before he ran over another set around 4500 South with the vehicle's right front tire.

Nigbur said the man drove about another mile on the rim of the damaged tire. Once the RV came to a stop, the man covered the windows with mattresses and barricaded himself inside for approximately two hours.

A tactical team arrived on the scene with an assault vehicle and used tear gas to force the man out. He exited the motor home five minutes after the tear gas was used and was taken into custody by Sunset police, according to Nigbur.

UHP closed I-15 southbound during the two-hour standoff. Traffic was diverted off I-15 to 5300 South.
