OREM (AP) — A former Orem police officer has been named the city's new chief of police.
The city announced Tuesday that Gary Giles, who has spent the past two years serving as a chief of police in Portland, Texas, will become the new Orem chief of police on Aug. 4.
City spokesman Stephen Downs told the Daily Herald that Giles' appointment is a key step in the city's move to re-establish its police department.
The city council voted earlier this year to divide the shared police and fire operations known as the Orem Department of Public Safety.
Scott Gurney, the city's fire chief, has also been serving as the acting police chief since the previous chief retired in January 2013.
He will focus on the fire operations full-time starting in August.
