OGDEN — A man died after he and his family got stranded in the mountains east of Ogden. Crews have not been able to recover his body due to weather but were expected to resume efforts Thursday morning.
Cpl. Mark Horton of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office said dispatch received a call Wednesday from a woman at Causey Reservoir. She had been hiking with her mother and stepfather, who were stranded in Wheatgrass Canyon. The stepfather was experiencing some sort of medical emergency.
“This is a very remote area with no cellphone service for miles. They hiked for most of the day before they were able to find some help,” Horton said.
Crews found the stranded hikers and hoisted the woman off the mountain, but the man had already died.
“It appears that the family started out hiking Monday but did not check the weather forecast and was not prepared for the weather they encountered,” Horton said.
They did not have proper supplies as heavy rain and snow hit the area, he said.
Horton said weather conditions made it too dangerous for a helicopter to return for the body, so crews will resume the retrieval effort Thursday morning.
