SALT LAKE CITY — A man who police say ran a red light while riding a bicycle was arrested for investigation of drug possession.
Just after noon Monday, a Salt Lake police officer spotted a man riding a bicycle "at a high rate of speed" and run a red light at 800 South and 300 East, said police detective Greg Wilking. The officer turned on his patrol vehicle's emergency lights and siren, but the cyclist refused to stop.
The officer followed, but the bicyclist suddenly hit his brakes, causing the patrol car to bump the bike's rear tire, Wilking said. Despite being knocked to the ground, the cyclist got up and continued running.
The officer caught the man near 741 S. 300 East. In the man's front pocket were six "eight balls" of methamphetamine, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.
Roland Christopher Roth, 20, was arrested for investigation of fleeing and drug possession.
Roth was charged in April in 3rd District Court with felony drug possession and had an active warrant for his arrest at the time of Monday's incident. He also pleaded guilty to a drug-related charge in 2013 and was sentenced to probation.
Roth had a second warrant out for his arrest Monday for violating the terms of that probation, according to court records.
