ST. GEORGE – Fire crews contained a brush fire on the border between Washington City and St. George on Sunday afternoon.

Fire officials said the fire was difficult to fight because of the terrain by the river bottom. Flames shot about 50 to 60 feet in the air and could be seen for miles, which happens when tamarack trees catch fire, officials said.

“Luckily there wasn’t the afternoon wind like we’ve been having,” Capt. Coty Chadburn of the St. George Fire Department said. “If there was the afternoon wind, it could have been a lot worse.”

Firefighters fought the flames for about 2½ hours. Officials say no structures were threatened and the fire was 100 percent contained.
