SALT LAKE CITY – Salt Lake City police are investigating a hit-and-run incident that left a child in critical condition Friday night.
At around 9:40 p.m. on Friday night, a 5-year-old girl was crossing the street near 1000 West 400 South in an attempt to get to a friend’s house when a westbound vehicle struck her, according to Salt Lake police Sgt. Robin Heiden.
The vehicle is described as a light gray or tan four-door sedan with a black and white tribal bumper sticker above the rear license plate. Heiden said the vehicle would likely have some front-end damage. It is unknown how many occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
“This is the type of case that Utah law says that you are supposed to stop if you are involved in an accident and render aid or at least call 911,” Heiden said. “This vehicle didn’t even stop and continued to go. The female was not in a crosswalk so most likely the vehicle probably would not have been at fault, but now that they left the scene they’re probably facing a felony.”
Salt Lake Police Department accident investigators were called out Friday night and continue to work on the case.
Heiden said if anyone has any information regarding the hit-and-run or vehicles matching the description to call Salt Lake Dispatch at 801-799-3000.
