TOOELE — After more than a year of closed doors, Deseret Peak Aquatic Center invites the public back for some fun in the sun.

The pool closed due to budget cuts in the county. County Commissioner Sean Milne learned of the county's need for finances just after coming into office and realized major budget cuts needed to happen.

"We went into immediate savings mode, where we needed to conserve any resources that we had that would yield expenses and we began looking at the niceties versus the necessities of county level government," Milne said.

The budget cuts led to the closure of one of Utah's largest pool's. The public made it obvious it wasn't happy with the closure, Milne said. With the doors closed, Tooele County saved $200,000.

However, Tooele County recently received financial help from EnergySolutions to open the pool Memorial weekend and through the summer. EnergySolutions, which had been negatively known for its placement of radioactive waste in Tooele County, felt the need to give back to the community, according to Vice President of Communications Mark Walker.

“We are always looking for ways in which we can give back to the communities in which we work and live,” Walker said. “Tooele County plays a vital role in the success of the work we do and we felt it was important to support this need.”

The pool's name will change from Deseret Peak Aquatic Center to The EnergySolutions Aquatic Center, according to the agreement.
