MILLCREEK — Two men are in custody after fleeing the scene of an armed robbery in Millcreek Tuesday evening, officials said.

Around 6:25 p.m., police were called to an armed robbery at the Lugano restaurant located at 3363 S. 2300 East.

The men approached the hostess just inside the door, showed her a handgun and demanded cash from her. She complied, opening the cash register. The men pushed her out of the way and grabbed the cash box, UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal said.

The men ran out of the restaurant, and were chased by two Lugano employees. When they reached their vehicle — a grey pickup truck — one of the men produced and brandished a shotgun at the employees in chase.

The alleged robbers fled westbound on 3300 South when an officer in the area spotted their vehicle. He turned around and tried to catch up with them, but they abandoned the vehicle at a business and fled on foot.

Officers set up a containment area, an officer spotted the men walking down 2100 East. When the men saw the police officer, they ran northbound and then westbound on 3220 South, Hoyal said.

Officers chased the men to 2060 E. 3220 South, where they disappeared into the residential area.

One of the men was apprehended on the lawn of a neighboring home and was taken into custody without incident, Hoyal said. He was in possession of a handgun.

The other man was discovered hiding in a garage that he had forced open. Policed used a K-9 to clear the area, and the man was also taken into custody without further incident.

“It was just a random house, that the suspect had forced entry. Fortunately, nobody was home when this crime took place,” Hoyal said. “Nobody was hurt.”

Charges will be determined after police interview the men. Hoyal said once the interviews have concluded, they will be booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges that may include aggravated robbery, burglary and fleeing, as well as any other charges that may come about through this investigation.

No one was hurt during the robbery or the chase.
