SALT LAKE CITY — Sunday, Elder M. Russell Ballard became the first apostle of the LDS church to register for and tweet on Twitter, according to the LDS church.

The world sees Internet sensations every day, but usually these sensations are popular because of humor. However, new studies have shown that many religions are going online and that the movement is gaining traction.

As of Monday, M. Russell Ballard's single tweet from @M_RBallard had received 274 retweets and 705 favorites. He has 4,226 followers and is following a mere five Twitter handles.

Thank you to all who tuned in to the devotional. It was a joy to be with you, both those in San Diego and throughout the world. #CESDevo — M. Russell Ballard (@M_RBallard) May 5, 2014

Elder Ballard's tweet said, "Thank you to all who tuned in to the devotional. It was a joy to be with you, both those in San Diego and throughout the world." He even got fancy by including a hashtag #CESDevo.

It isn't known whether additional church apostles intend to become Twitter users.
