OGDEN — An Ogden man is dead following a standoff with police Tuesday afternoon.

The individual died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. They believed the incident occurred as the SWAT team was preparing to enter the residence.

Officers said they thought they heard a muffled pop from the outside the building at approximately 1:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Ogden Police Lt. Scott Conley said.

"Unfortunately the outcome was not reached that we wanted," Conley said. "A 26-year-old male was found deceased when SWAT entered the building. This young man apparently felt he had to do what he did."

Police are not releasing the name of the deceased individual pending notification of his family.

"He told the other individuals he was with he wasn't going to prison," Conley said. "He hadn't had any major conflicts with police before."

Residents of a Lincoln Avenue duplex located in the 1700 block called police Tuesday afternoon after discovering what they believed to be stolen vehicles behind the building, Conley said.

"While police were looking at the vehicles, a few individuals came out of the duplex," Conley said. "Three of these people were arrested in connection with the car thefts."

Police were told a fourth individuals had locked himself inside the apartment with a small caliber handgun.

"We were told he said he was planning on having a shootout with police," Conley said. "At that point, we called in members of SWAT."

Most of the homes have been evacuated in the area as a safety precaution, Conley said. All schools have been notified, and officers advised those traveling through Ogden to avoid Lincoln Avenue.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
