LEHI — A Virginia man was killed and another man critically injured early Saturday when the driver of a car who apparently fell asleep struck them on the side of I-15, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.
Boyd Miles, 42, of Franklin County, Virginia, was dragged about 150 feet and died at the scene.
Christopher Crandall, 23, also from Franklin County, was thrown over jersey barriers onto a nearby frontage road. He was flown by medical helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo in "extremely critical condition."
The men had been traveling in a semitrailer that had broke down and was on the shoulder of southbound I-15 near Lehi. A tow truck driver was hooking the semi up to his vehicle about 2:30 a.m. when the three men were struck by a Honda Civic driven by James Warren, 27, of Lehi, according to the UHP.
Miles and Crandall were standing outside when they were hit. The tow truck driver was underneath the semi hooking it up to his truck. He was treated for minor injuries at the scene. Warren was uninjured, the UHP said.
