SANDY — No arrests have been made in the killing of a retired Salt Lake police officer, but investigators are optimistic the crime will be solved.

Kevin Meik, 63, lived alone in his home, near 9000 South and 1500 East, where he was found dead two months ago. After he missed two appointments on Jan. 29, concerned family members called police.

Officers found Meik in a bedroom, dead from a gunshot wound. There were no obvious signs of a struggle.

“There didn’t appear to be anything significant taken from the residence,” Sandy Police Sgt. Jon Arnold said.

Evidence from the crime scene that may be critical to solving the case is currently being tested at the state crime lab, he said Wednesday. “We’re in a holding pattern a little bit, waiting for this evidence to come back so we can verify information, and so that is where we are at this point.”

Investigators are keeping their theories about a motive or possible suspects to themselves.

"We'd like to hope we are pointed in the right direction,” Arnold said. “That being said, that is why we are waiting for this information to come back, so we can proceed in the direction we need to.”

Meik was with the Salt Lake City Police Department from 1974 until he retired in 1988.

Anyone with information on the case can call police at 801-799-3000.
