SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man who had to be airlifted from a cruise ship near North Carolina when he became sick last weekend is making plans to return home. His bride of two weeks says she’s made the most of her honeymoon in a hospital.

Brent Killian is in stable condition and was moved out of the ICU at Albermarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, N.C., late Saturday morning. Both he and his wife, Jo, remain in great spirits.

“Gotta make the most of the situation, and be with each other and support each other. I think that’s the important thing here,” Jo Killian said in a phone interview Sunday.

Married for only two weeks, the couple has already learned the meaning of “through sickness and in health.”

Brent Killian is diabetic. His blood composition became unbalanced while the couple was celebrating their honeymoon on a cruise on the Atlantic Ocean. After being treated for 24 hours on the ship, he was airlifted by the U.S. Coast Guard and taken to the nearest hospital. He has been hospitalized at Albermarle for almost a week.

“When I get too stircrazy in the hospital, I go out,” Jo Killian said. “I’ve tried some local restaurants here. I’m a seafood fan and found out, oh wow! Along the coast they have some pretty decent seafood.”

She has also done a little sight-seeing, stopping by a nearby waterfront and reading a little history of the city. But most of her time is spent by her husband’s side.

“(We’re) hanging out more than we probably would have otherwise, if we’d been home by now,” Jo Killian said.

Brent Killian is recovering well, his wife sad. He's taking antibiotics and getting plenty of rest. Doctors say he should be mostly recovered by Tuesday, when the couple plans to fly home to Salt Lake City.

“We’re looking forward to getting home,” Jo Killian said.
