SALT LAKE CITY — BYU-Hawaii made the official announcement Friday that the school plans to phase out NCAA athletics from its school over the next three years.

Eleven intercollegiate teams, all competing in the NCAA Division II PacWest Conference, will be affected by this decision, a press release stated.

Money currently spent on athletics programs “will be used to provide educational opportunities for the increasing number of students from around the world who can be served by the university,” the release stated.

A couple of factors BYU-Hawaii took into consideration in making the decision included the remote location of the campus and the rising costs of education, according to the press release.

The university stated it is working with the student-athletes and the coaches and staff affected by this decision. BYU-Hawaii ensured all committed scholarships will be honored, and they intend to complete the scheduled seasons.
