SUGAR HOUSE — Developers are looking to make big changes in Sugar House, and these changes are up for discussion at a public hearing on Tuesday night.

The Salt Lake City Council will hear a rezoning proposal meant to capitalize on the new S-Line trolley in the heart of Sugar House. Changes would allow four-story buildings in areas closer to neighborhoods, and up to 105 feet tall — around nine or 10 stories — at 2100 South and 700 East.

Developers have plans for more retail and more offices in the already booming area. An abandoned tennis court near Fairmont Park could be a future site of new apartments. However, not everyone is excited about the proposal, and some people want to put the brakes on the development.

“We want to keep the space open. Green space is really important to us,” Christy Paulos, a Sugar House resident, said. “Especially closer to our house, it’s just so condensed.”

Fellow Sugar House resident Linda Collins is concerned about traffic as well. “There’s not enough room there. Sugarmont is a narrower street. Where are they going to park?”

These concerns, as well as many others, will be addressed at a public hearing Tuesday night.

Salt Lake City Council members plan on keeping an open mind at the hearing. “I think it’s important as a council that we look at all the different options that are out there,” Councilman Charlie Luke said.

Councilwoman Lisa Adams agreed. “It doesn’t have to be all restaurants and stores to be worthwhile. I could see it being a destination that people want to come to Fairmont Park to do fun activities.”

The public hearing will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
