WEST VALLEY CITY — A man shot in the head over the weekend during an apparent robbery has been upgraded from critical to serious condition, according to police.

West Valley City Police Sgt. Blair Barfuss said detectives hoped to interview the 20-year-old man within the next day or two.

Patrick Van Pham, 18, remained in the Salt Lake County Jail on Tuesday for investigation of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, illegal discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Sunday, Pham went to the victim's residence at the Overlook Point Apartments, 4640 S. 2970 West, with the intention to rob him, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

Pham and the man went into a bathroom, and moments later witnesses "heard what sounded like fighting and then several gunshots," the report said.

A 20-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after he was shot in the head during a fight at an apartment complex.

Pham came out of the bathroom holding a gun, and several witnesses tried to grab him, fearing he would try to also shoot them, according to the report. During the ensuing struggle, Pham fired more shots that almost hit the witnesses, the report said.

Pham fled back to his residence and put the clothes he was wearing into a garbage bag along with "a large amount of cash which had what appeared to be blood on it," the report said.

Police arrived and arrested Pham just as he was leaving. They also found evidence of drug use in the trash bag, the report said.

Pham was charged less than two weeks ago in 3rd District Court on several drug-related counts after police say he attempted to rob a Phillips 66 gas station at 1605 S. Foothill Drive.

Pham was arrested after an employee chased him and sat on him until police arrived, according to court documents.
