MAGNA — Strong winds and no immediate source of water made a suspicious fire at an abandoned home difficult to extinguish Saturday morning.
Unified Fire Capt. Fitzgerald Petersen said the only water available near the home, 5894 S. state Route 111, was a tank on one of the firefighter's trucks, until access to a hydrant several thousand feet away and across the road was obtained.
SR-111 was shut down between 5800 South and 8000 South for a couple hours after the 8:30 a.m. fire broke out because heavy smoke impacted visibility and a hose was also spread across the surface, Petersen said.
The roof of the home collapsed and walls became unstable, requiring the use of a backhoe to knock down the structure.
Petersen said no one was injured and property owners were notified. He said police have had issues with trespassing in the area, making the cause of the fire "suspicious."
