TAYLORSVILLE — A woman was hospitalized in critical condition Monday night after being struck by a vehicle while walking on I-215 near 5900 South and Redwood Road.
Police began receiving calls at about 9 p.m. that a pedestrian was walking on the right shoulder in the westbound lane. She was wearing dark clothing and was hard to see, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce.
Additional calls came in that the woman was standing in the middle of the roadway, Royce said. Shortly thereafter, police received a call that the woman had been hit.
Other vehicles swerved to miss the woman as she lay in the roadway, and one vehicle collided with the vehicle that hit the woman, according to police. No additional injuries were reported.
The 31-year-old woman, who was not identified, was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition, Royce said.
Royce said the woman was hit by a "glancing blow" from the vehicle's mirror and was not hit directly.
Police said the woman's reasoning for walking on the freeway remained under investigation.
