As legislators are busy at the capitol working on laws for the state, their spouses are busy working on ways to strengthen communities.

It's a program that begins on Utah's Capitol Hill, but it has nothing to do with laws or taxes. Rep. Brad Dee’s wife, Marsha, put the project together.

“We have the blessing and opportunity of doing some kind of a service project every year,” Marsha said. “This has been a great blessing for me just to see the reaction of the children.”

This year the group decided the theme of its service project would be Dr. Seuss books. The group was able to get more than 1,200 books to hand out to students in three areas of the state: Washington Terrace Elementary, Iva Paw Elementary and LaVerkin Elementary.

Rep. Dee handed out books to the students at Washington Terrace Elementary, a school that has been focusing on increasing reading time and skills.

“We noticed kind of a lag here at school,” said Lori Rasmussen, principal at Washington Terrace Elementary.

Friday morning, a special delivery of more than 600 Dr. Seuss books was made to Washington Terrace Elementary.

“I like monkeys and its about a monkey,” said Trekker Johnson, a first-grader at the school.

Kids got a new book to take home and it's helping these kids get more excited about reading.

“Now people can dive into their book and be in a new world so we can have some fun in this book,” second-grader Talor Keller said. “It’s called 'Fox in Socks' and it is really interesting. It’s really nice that they got us these books to have.”

If people would like to help children in his or her area read Dr. Seuss and other books, they can become a tutor with KSL's Read Today AmeriCorps program.
