SALT LAKE CITY — Drivers will be able to legally push the needle to 80 mph on more Utah roads under a bill the Legislature has approved.
Appropriately numbered HB80 allows the Utah Department of Transportation to raise the speed limits on highways and freeways in urban areas from 65 mph to 70 mph or 75 mph, and to 80 mph in less-populated areas of the state, according to the bill.
The state has allowed 80 mph speed limits on some rural stretches for several years.
The Senate passed the bill 21-4 on Friday. The House approved it earlier this month. It now goes to the governor.
