SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah lawmakers may set aside some extra money this year to help remove a large number of carp causing problems in a lake near Provo.
The Daily Herald of Provo reports the Legislature's natural resources budget committee has recommended spending $500,000 to help remove carp from Utah Lake.
The recommendation advances to the Legislature's main budget committee.
The Utah Lake Commission is working to remove carp from the lake because the fish are now eating almost everything, leaving other fish without enough food.
The commission estimates it will cost about $2 million a year for three years to get rid of enough carp to restore the lake's natural ecology.
Spanish Fork Republican Rep. Mike McKell sought state funding for the effort and says he hopes local counties and cities will chip in as well.
