PROVO — A Provo woman is in this hospital after being trapped in a canyon slot for more than eight hours Monday night.

Rebecca Winters, 23, was hiking with a group in Chamber Canyon, located in Canyonlands National Park — about 11 miles east of Hanksville.

One member of the group was trying to help her get through a slot with a rope. Winters let go of the rope and fell, according to Kassidee Brown with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Winters only fell about 6 feet, but it was enough to break her ankle. Search and rescue teams were called around 1 p.m., reached Winters around 6 p.m., and for the next five hours worked to help her get out of the slot.

At one point they were forced to rappel 60 feet down a cliff to reach her.

She was taken by medical helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center just before 11 p.m.
