SOUTH JORDAN — Jana LeVitre had more than 1,000 photos on the Pentax camera that she accidentally dropped into Lake Tahoe two and a half years ago.

Just last week, a man from Reno, Nev., fished it back to the surface, and his wife noticed that the camera and the digital photos were all intact.

"They were pretty bummed that they'd only caught four fish that day. So he went home and brought the four fish in and said, 'Oh, and here's a camera, by the way,'" LeVitre said.

The couple posted a few of the photos on Facebook to track LeVitre down.

“Because (the fisherman's wife) is a photographer, she feels attached to her pictures. So she thought, ‘Whoever lost this camera might be really sad. I’ve got to find the owner of this camera,’” LeVitre explained.

Friends of friends helped LeVitre get in touch with her camera’s rescuers. She was stunned.

“It’s waterproof, but I’m not going to swim 200 feet down and I wouldn’t even know where it is. So I just thought it would be forever gone,” she said. "I just happen to be really, really lucky."

LeVitre doesn’t even remember what photos were on the camera, but she’s elated to have the memories back.

She had thought it would be safer to keep the images on her camera in case her computer crashed.
