WEST VALLEY CITY — A man charged more than two and a half years ago in a drug-related shooting at a grocery store parking lot was arrested in connection with the crime Tuesday.

Valentin Aguilar Hernandez, 30, who goes by the moniker "Primo," was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. He is charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony, in 3rd District Court.

On May 10, 2011, West Valley police responded to a call of shots fired in the parking lot of WinCo, 2572 S. 5600 West. Witnesses reported seeing a man with an AK-47, and officers found two .380 shell casings, according to court documents.

Later, police were notified of a man being treated at University Hospital who had been grazed in the head by a bullet.

"The bullet was lodged between the skull and the skin and popped out," the charges state.

The victim and a friend told police they were at the WinCo parking lot to make a drug deal. When the deal was completed, other vehicles showed up. The men got in their own car and started to drive away and were immediately fired upon, charging documents state.

Fernando Martinez Trejo, 35, the co-defendant, was also charged with attempted murder. He was arrested shortly after the incident and was then released while prosecutors reviewed the case for possible charges. They eventually charged him in July of 2011 and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Hernandez, the alleged shooter, was also charged in July of 2011.

On Jan. 14, Hernandez reportedly called the court to inform them that he had been living in Texas since 2010 and asked to schedule a court date, according to court records.

On Monday, he made his initial appearance in court. Bail was set at $100,000.
