SALT LAKE CITY — The digital currency Bitcoin is growing in popularity across the globe. A single bitcoin is currently valued at over $800.
The Bitcoin marketplace has also been expanding recently as investors buy up fractile amounts or entire coins at a time. Many businesses now accept Bitcoin as legitimate currency, and here in Utah the number of establishments where a customer can pay in bitcoins is increasing every day.
Recently the Salt Lake City eatery, Pie Hole, announced it will be joining the ranks of local businesses where Bitcoin is accepted.
Bitcoin community organizer Alan Walker said he’s thrilled to see Pie Hole join the Bitcoin ranks.
“There is a whole community of people wanting to support local Utah businesses,” Walker said. “We’re excited to spend our bitcoin on fantastic pizza!”
To redeem pizza for Bitcoin, a customer needs to have a smartphone on hand. A QR code linking to the business’ Bitcoin account is scanned, and the amount is sent from the customer’s totals.
A growing number of businesses in Utah are now accepting Bitcoin. Here's a list of local businesses that accept Bitcoin according to Coinmap.org, a Bitcoin business directory:
