MESQUITE — A Minnesota man is accused of holding his ex-girlfriend against her will for six months in Mesquite, Nev. Her alleged ordeal came to an end over the weekend.

Jason Greniger, 34, and Sheena Herschbach had lived together while they were dating in Minnesota. But after they broke up, Herschback moved to California where Greniger tracked her down, police said.

Police Sergeant MaQuade Chesley said Greniger took Herschbach from her home in California, with the intent to go back to Minnesota, where the two had lived before. But instead, they stopped in Mesquite where Herschbach was isolated and not allowed to have a phone.

Herschback's Facebook page went silent in June until family members said they noticed a panicked post on Saturday. The Mesquite Police Department received the tip that Greniger was holding Herschback captive in a hotel.

"She did not make the call. We received the call from a male that was friends with her in the past," said Nevada Police Sgt. MaQuade Chesley. "She was held under the presumption that if she were to leave him, then she would be killed and, subsequently, her family would be killed," he said.

During her captivity, she was allowed to go in public by herself only twice, according to police.

"She informed us she was allowed to go to the store and buy beer on one occasion and had gone to the library once alone," Chesley said.

Greniger was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for investigation of second-degree felony kidnapping, since police said Herschback was kept in an abusive relationship against her will. Greniger could also face charges for breaking a protective order she had against him.

The woman wasn't listed as a missing person, but her family said they were very concerned because they hadn't seen her for six months. Herschback is urging others to escape abusive relationships.

"It's not worth the pain and the suffering to stay in a relationship that you're getting abused in," she said.
