PARK CITY — Several people were stuck on for almost two hours after a Park City Mountain Resort ski lift broke down Friday.

It was the last run of the day for BYU students Ryan Whiteside, Jordan Franks and Michael Ferrell when the lift came to a halt.

"After about 10 minutes there was a ski patrol that came over and talked to us and notified us that it's going to be one or two hours before you guys can get down," Whiteside said.

The students considered jumping the 40 to 50 feet down at one point, but ski patrol told them it definitely wasn't a good idea.

There was nothing for them to do but huddle together in the cold and wait for rescue.

After about 90 minutes, rescuers set up a rope system and harnesses so stranded skiers and snowboarders could rappel down.

"I guess the only scary part was rappelling off the ski chair down, because it was about 40 to 50 foot drop," Franks said.

No word on what caused the lift to break down, and no injuries were reported.
