NEPHI — The driver and passenger of a semitruck were injured when the truck crashed on I-15 Thursday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred near mile post 217, about 5 miles south of Nephi in the southbound lanes at around 2:10 p.m., UHP said. One lane of traffic was blocked blocked.
According to UHP, the truck was traveling from Chicago en route to Los Angeles when it drove off the highway into the median, leaving no skid marks. The truck overturned when the driver attempted to drive back onto the roadway. The truck and trailer slid approximately 50 yards.
The tractor and the trailer separated, with the truck coming to a rest in the southbound lefthand lane. The trailer broke apart and came to rest on its top in the median.
The semi was hauling a mixed load of hazardous materials and other items, including ethylene glycol menomethyl ether and methylbutyl, requiring a hazmat response.
The driver sustained cuts on his head and co-driver appeared to be uninjured. Both were transported to Central Valley Medical Center.
As of Thursday evening, the southbound number one lane is closed and crews are cleaning up. Nephi Fire is on scene monitoring the crash.
