BLUFF, San Juan County — Two semitrucks collided head-on early Wednesday near the Utah-Arizona border, killing one of the drivers.

About 12:45 a.m., a semitrailer hauling produce on U.S. 191 crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a semi carrying mail, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

Michael Eckerman, 29, of Glendale, Ariz., was pronounced dead at the scene. Eckerman was the driver of the vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic, according to the UHP.

The other driver received minor injuries.

"Both trailers were ripped open and their contents were scattered," the UHP reported.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation Wednesday afternoon. Weather was not believed to be a factor.

The U.S. Postal Service was contacted shortly after the accident and sent people to the scene to collect the mail that had spilled onto the road, according to the UHP. All of the mail from the damaged semi reportedly was accounted for.
